FORCE ON COOLER

okay so this weekend i had a dog show on the windward side of the island. i had to wake up so early both days which was a bummer and now i am exhausted :( but it was fun. anyways, as we were setting up and unloading the car, i thought to myself that HEY physics was involved!! when i unloaded the cooler from the back of the car, i realized that this involved force, which we just read about. force can be defined as pulling or pushing and is measured in newtons (1kgxm/s squared). there were two forces involved in this action: the downward force of gravity on earth and the upward force which i exerted. in order for the cooler to be lifted up, i had to exert an upward force which was greater than the earth's downward force of gravity on the cooler. this would cause the cooler to accelerate upwards, allowing me to lift it up and out of the car.

BASKETBALL!!

this weekend, while i was walking my dog through the park, i saw some people playing basketball, or rather shooting free throws. i realized that this had to do something with physics!! BUT i didnt have my phone or camera with me at the time so i had to draw a picture :( hahaha. anyways, the horizontal displacement would be how far the person who was shooting the basketball was standing from the hoop. if the person was actually standing on the free throw line, this distance would be 4.6 m (haha i googled that thanks to micah :)) the vertical displacement would be the distance from the hoop to the ground. since the basketball is being thrown in the air, its y-acceleration is -9.8 m/s squared, which is the free-fall acceleration on earth. the x-acceleration would be 0 m/s squared. the inital velocity of the ball would be greater than its final velocity. hopefully next time when i see something relating to physics, i will be able to take a picture of it so i wont have to draw! :)

FIRST ENTRY!!

physics is alright so far. i like chem better haha but class is definitely more fun. and i agree with kelli ching about DIMDIM MEETINGS!! :) whoever thought of that is brilliant. but i also need a microphone so i can talk! our first test was ummm...lets just say thanks doc for that little extra. anyways, i like the labs we do. i think i can understand concepts better that way than just reading it online. the motion sensor is interesting and the lab book helps keeps me organized. i wonder how many consecutive quizzes we'll have. we don't HAVE to make a record, doc haha. but those quizzes keep me on track so its all good. we should have a group quiz sometime! :) i like how hw isn't always due the next day. its less stressful that way i guess. i'm excited for more blog entries and dimdim meetings!!
